New schools, and new or refurbished buildings within existing schools must comply with Requirement E4 of Part E of The Building Regulations. All schools also need to comply with The School Premises Regulations and Independent School Standards. The normal way of complying with these requirements is to achieve the performance standards set out in Building Bulletin 93 Acoustic design of schools: Performance standards.
Many studies have concluded the importance that good acoustics has on children’s learning outcome at school. For example, one study identified that a 5 decibel (dBA) increase in external noise intrusion into a classroom causes a 2-month delay in reading ability of students.
At ACA Acoustics we are highly experienced in undertaking the necessary sound level surveys and providing the acoustic design for new and refurbished schools, from initial feasibility and concept studies through to detailed design to ensure compliance with BB93 and acoustic testing at completion.
